Hand-drawn type for Magazine

You may have noticed we have included a new page on our website, hand-drawn type! In my off time, I have begun exploring type through drawing it myself. I’ve found I feel much more free to explore fonts and compositions this way. As you may have noticed, I’ve really taken a liking to this practice so I began showing off my illustrations on social media with the hopes of incorporating it into design for clients. The John Cooper School was the first client of mine to take the bait!

I’m so excited to (finally) show off the custom cover illustration I did for their magazine, Cooper News. As with all my drawings, I sketched out the concept in my notebook and then inked it once I was happy with the final layout. From there I digitized the drawing using illustrator and dropped it into the layout. Easy peasy and SO very gratifying.

Of course I’m thrilled with the entire issue. This issue revolved around JCS’ new science building so I had fun with the spreads for that section. Below are a few shots of the cover and spreads.
